Starting out in a shed on their Yackandandah property, the couple moved the operation to open a distillery door and tasting room at the Yack Station Precinct, in February 2021.
The distillery produces handcrafted batches of single malt and rye whisky, alongside a range of gins that highlight native botanicals. Their first whiskies were released in August 2020 and the team have already picked up several prestigious awards – most recently winning best rye whisky at the World Whiskies Awards for their uniquely Australian rye.
Backwoods have also collected medals at the London Spirits Awards and Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. With an ethos of using 100% Australian grains, local casks and native botanicals, Backwoods is proving to be one of Australia’s best examples of the quality of spirits produced locally.
Backwoods’ distillery door offers the unique experience of enjoying a tasting paddle or G&T, while sitting beside the beautiful copper stills that make the spirits. Visitors also have the best chance of picking up exclusive whisky bottlings and seasonal gin releases.
